New Island Hospital is holding its 5K RUN/WALK on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Bethpage State Park Polo Field in honor and memory of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, who died in the mountains of Afghanistan on June 28, 2005, during a covert operation in an attempt to save the lives of his fellow SEALs. On May 7, 2008 Secretary of Navy Dr. Donald C. Winters announced a new Navy guided missile destroyer DDG112 currently being built will carry the name, USS Michael Murphy.
Join the New Island Family, the Patriot Guard Riders, Nam Knights and the Vietnam Veterans of America Presentation of Colors, Bethpage Fire Deoartment, Navy Honor Guard and a live band in the opening ceremonies honoring Lt. Murphy. His mother Maureen and his father Daniel along with Congressman Peter King are honorary co-chairs of this monumental event.
New Island is a proud participant in the 2008 Long Island Track and Field Cross Country Challenge and all proceeds from this event will benefit the purchase of emergency medical equipment for our Emergency Room, where our staff takes its motivation from Michael's courage to do more than is asked, to persevere under stress and to strive for excellence every day.
